The ideal time to pay attention to your shrubs is during winter since the leaves are long gone and most woody plants are dormant and therefore this is the ideal time to give the shrubs a trim. At Hedge Trimming Guys in Newhall, IA you will find out why, what and how to prune the shrubs.
One option is to prune the shrubs back over a three year period. Begin by removing one-third of the largest, oldest stems at ground level in late winter/early spring (March or early April).

The following year (again in March or early April), prune out one-half of the remaining old. For most shrubs, late winter or early spring is the best time to prune. The plants are still in full dormancy at this time but are just preparing to produce new growth. If your shrub is a spring-blooming variety, though, make sure to leave behind enough flower buds on the stems for a spring show.
